Physical Education
Intent
At Cosby Primary School, we recognise the importance of PE and the role it has to play in promoting long term, healthy lifestyles. The intent of our PE curriculum is to provide all children with high quality PE and sport provision. It is our vision for every pupil to succeed and achieve their potential as well as to lead physically active lifestyles. We strive to inspire our pupils through fun and engaging PE lessons that are enjoyable, challenging and accessible to all. We want our pupils to appreciate the benefits of a healthy and physically active lifestyle. Through our teaching of PE, we will provide opportunities for pupils to develop values and transferrable life skills such as fairness and respect as well as providing them with opportunities to take part in competitive sport.
Implementation
Children are taught regularly by both teaching staff and a sports coach, from Reception to Year 6. The curriculum is further enhanced by participation in numerous sporting tournaments with other schools in the area and after school clubs. A play leader supervises sports activities at lunchtime, including: football, hockey, basketball and netball.
Annually, four of our Year 6 pupils receive training to be Active Leaders, whereby they offer a range of sporting activities for children to participate in at lunchtime.
We follow the guidelines set by the national curriculum to ensure we offer a range of PE activities that allow each child to feel challenged and offer opportunities to progress further.
We teach lessons so that children:
- Have fun and experience success in sport.
- Have the opportunity to participate in P.E at their own level of development.
- Secure and build on a range of skills.
- Develop good sporting attitudes.
- Understand basic rules.
- Experience positive competition.
- Learn in a safe environment.
Impact
All children receive a broad and balanced PE curriculum regardless of year group or ability. Every child will access all of the key areas of the subject on offer at our school. Teachers plan PE with clear progression of skills and knowledge that we have devised as part of our curriculum offer to ensure that all children access it at an age-appropriate level. As well as our regular PE lessons, we hold daily opportunities for physical activity such playground games at lunchtimes and a wide variety of after school clubs. The children have the opportunity to take part in competitions throughout the school year against other local schools.
